Cary
Virginia Dare Worthington Bryant of Stedman passed away March 23, 2023. She was born April 7, 1924, the daughter of Mamie Summersett and Otho Hilton Worthington of Whiteville.
Upon completing high school she began working for the News Reporter in Whiteville. In 1952, she married Charles Douglas Bryant, who was teaching at Hallsboro High School. As Douglas pursued educational and career opportunities their family resided in Leyte, Philippines, East Lansing, MI, Raleigh, NC and Cary, NC for 22 years. She was a stay-at-home mother through her children's upbringing and then worked in the guidance office at Cary High School for 10 years. Virginia and Douglas both retired in 1984 and moved to Douglas’ home place in Stedman, N.C. where they enjoyed many bountiful years of gardening, involvement in the community and leadership roles at Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter Melinda B. Bynum of Rocky Mount, her parents, brothers Milton, Hilton, Warren, Eugene and Kenneth and sister Miriam W. Horton.
She is survived by her son Charles Douglas (Chuck) Bryant, Jr (Katherine) of Cary, son-in-law Harry Bynum (Melissa) of Rocky Mount, grandsons, Charles D. Bryant III of New York, NY; Zack Bynum (Meredith) of Raleigh; Alex Bynum (Alex) of Raleigh; Charles Lynell Bynum of Raleigh, and step-grandchildren Marjorie Keel Gately (Tyler) of Charlotte and Jimmy Keel (Clai) of Raleigh and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 11 o'clock at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery, officiating will be Pastor Ray Burkhardt.
Memorial donations may be made to Cokesbury Methodist Church, 7536 Clinton Road, Stedman, NC 28391.
