Richard Bascom Spell (R. B.) passed away on November 18, surrounded by family at Spring Arbor of Greensboro, N.C. R.B. was born on January 7,1929 in the Spell Town community to Muncey Spell and Hosie Crumpler Spell. He was a devoted husband of over 75 years to Elvina Autry Spell.
R. B. was the proprietor of Autryville Supply in Autryville and he also served as the Assistant Postmaster of the Autryville Post Office.
R. B. was a faithful member of Long Branch Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teacher, and member of countless church committees. He was also a member of the Roseboro Rotary Club, Roseboro Masonic Lodge, the Roseboro-Salemburg Area School Board, Founding Member of Lakewood Country Club, and served on the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank in Stedman, NC.
R. B. was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Clarence “Bill” Spell, Wilton Spell, James Wyman Spell, and his sister Myrtle Lewis.
R.B. is survived by his wife Elvina, his son Randy Spell and wife Pamela of Summerfield, son Richard Spell and wife Susan of Autryville, and sister Marie Spell Faircloth of Autryville.
He is also survived by two grandchildren: Richard Blake Spell and wife, Kimberly of Greensboro and Laura Caroline Spell Rick and husband Ross of Greensboro; four great grandchildren, Bryce Spell, Blaire Spell, and Hunter Kendall of Greensboro and Palmer Grey Rick of Greensboro; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Spring Arbor, Comfort Keepers of Greensboro and AuthoraCare Collective who assisted the family in providing wonderful personal care for R. B. over the past months.
The celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, November 20, at Long Branch Baptist Church, 2868 Minnie Hall Road, Autryville with Reverend Richard Spell officiating. The burial will follow at Sandy Horne Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM in the church sanctuary.
