Salemburg
The Rev. Dr. Earl D. Farthing, Sr. passed away on Jan. 25th. The son of James S. Farthing, Sr. and Beatrice (Underwood) Farthing was born Aug. 29, 1932 and reared in Dunn, N.C. He received his B.A. in English from Wake Forest, his Master of Divinity from Southeastern Seminary, and his Doctor of Ministry from Drew University. He pastored North Clinton Ave. Baptist Church and Mingo Baptist Church, both of Dunn, and First Baptist Church of Maxton, N.C. prior to going to Japan as a foreign missionary in 1961. After his return in 1965, He pastored Salemburg Baptist Church, Madison Ave. Baptist Church of Goldsboro, and Elizabethtown Baptist Church, from which he retired.
He is survived by his wife, Vondia Fann (Strickland) Farthing; brother, James S. Farthing, Jr.; son, Earl D. Farthing, Jr. and fiancée Tonya Braswell, grandchildren Cashwell Farthing and fiancé Phillip Roberts, E. Davis Farthing, III., J. Chandler Farthing, Aaron Conover, and Linda Catherine Conover; nephew, James S. Farthing, III. and wife Laureen and daughter Michelle; niece, Lucille Smith and husband Lee and daughter Whitney Harrison and husband Bobby and daughter Piper Smith; Vondia’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whom he loved as his own: Lynette Wilson and husband Tom and son Trey Tyson and wife Kendall and children Case, Avery, and Julian Kate; Kettrell Strickland and wife Sharon and children Phillip Strickland and wife Danielle and children Harper, Claire, and Pearce; Thomas Pope and Courtney Kramer; Forest Strickland and wife Laura and children Shepherd and Corrie Lynn; Clay Strickland and wife Gina and children Catherine Ward and husband Eric and son Jesse, and Frederick Strickland. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Lovie Catherine “Tookie” (Cashwell) Farthing, his sister in law Rosalyn Poole Farthing, and his daughter Catherine Ann (Farthing) Conover.
The funeral will be at Salemburg Baptist Church on Saturday, February 19th at 12:00 noon.
