Norman Johnson Martin

Newport News, VA

On Monday, July 19, 2021, 1st Class Petty Officer Norman Johnson Martin, Went home to Jesus at the age of 71. Norman was born on October 1, 1949 in Tar Heel, North Carolina, to the late James Walter and Thelma Martin of Tar Heel, NC. Norman followed his heart and joined the U.S. Navy and was able to travel the world. In 1986 he continued to serve as a recruiter until 2000, when he retired with 31 years of service. 

Mr. Martin is survived by the love of his life, his Wife, Betty L Martin,  His Daughter, Samantha Kostyal of Mathews, VA and Son Nicholas of Newport News, VA. Two Sisters, Nancy James and Christine Sealey of Lumberton, NC and four Brothers, James Jr., of Lumberton, NC, Charlie of Yorktown, VA, Larry of Tar Heel, NC, and Richard of Fayetteville, NC. Two Grandchildren, which he loved dearly Taylor and Logan Kostyal of Mathews, VA. Also, many Nieces and Nephews. 

Norman was a man of many hobbies, fishing and building race cars with his son were two of his favorite. Norman loved Ham Radio (AG4BI) and could always be found at the fishing pier or at Langley speedway with family and friends. He also loved to travel and take “get away” trips with his loving wife. Mr. Martin was known for his big heart, infectious smile and kind spirit. 

 A Graveside service with Military Honors will be held at Monroe Family Cemetery in Tar Heel, NC (590 Main Street, Tarheel). At 1:00 PM Saturday July 24, 2021, officiating will be Rev. Wayne Lee.
