Henry "Pudgie" Hardy Umphlet, 82 went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at his home.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 12, 2023 at Evergreen Baptist Church, officiating will be Rev. Charles Davis and Rev. Tommy Honeycutt. Burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park in Fayetteville.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, May 11, 2023 at Butler Funeral Home in Stedman.
Henry is preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Umphlet and Frances Caroline Hammonds Umphlet; his wife, Johnnie Umphlet; and sisters, Doris Carpenter and Marie Price.
Henry was a longtime member of Evergreen Baptist Church.
Henry was loved by many lifelong friends, and was adored by all of his family. Known by most as "Pudgie," he enjoyed golf, yard work, listening to music, and good food- especially hot dogs. He was an proud Eagle Scout and a Shriner of the Fayetteville Masonic Temple. Pudgie was born in Tarboro, North Carolina. He started his career in Tarboro in 1960 at Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, and retired after 40 years of service in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was always eager to help others, and was a cherished "neighborhood dad" when his sons were growing up. He became the "neighborhood poppa" when his grandkids and their friends needed rides to school.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his sons, Michael Hardy Umphlet and Jeffrey Neal Umphlet & wife, Joann all of Autryville; grandchildren, Timmy Stewart & wife, Mandi of Autryville, Nicole Lee & husband, Blake of Garner, and Jefferson Umphlet of Asheville; great grandchildren, Taylor and Skylar; and great great grandchild, Aubrey.
