Rev. Fred Perry Pierce, 101 went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 28, 2023 in Kenner, LA.
A funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro, NC. Burial will follow in the Roseboro Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 1:50 PM on Saturday, May 13 at Butler Funeral Home prior to the service.
Fred was born to Fred S. and Bessie Pierce on January 9, 1922 in Westfield, Maine. He attended public school at Westfield and Presque Isle and Brunswick in Maine. He graduated from Medford, Mass. High School in 1940.
He enlisted in the U. S. Naval Reserve and served on active duty from Oct. 27, 1942 to Oct. 18, 1947. After serving in various enlisted ranks he was commissioned as an Ensign and served as Personal Office on the Air Craft Carrier U.S.S. Randolph.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in June 1949. He was employed in the field of public accounting until June 1962.
He served as supply and student pastor in the United Methodist Church from 1963 – 1967. He enrolled at Duke University Divinity School and graduated in 1967 with a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained in June of 1967. He moved to Iowa and served the United Methodist Church from 1967 – 1991 when he retired.
He married Ethel Irene Crumpler on March 18, 1951 and following Ethel’s death he was married to Churesa Jong on May 21, 1980 until 2014.
Fred had a quick wit and had a heart for serving and helping others. One thing that he loved was eating good desserts.
He is survived by a daughter, Suzann Pierce of Kenner, LA; four step children, Sophia Pierce, Holly Hawkins (Joe), Bo Schnurr (Dave), Johann Pierce (Amy); grandchildren, Maggie, Donovan, Summer, Jack, Tyler, TJ, Ethan, Grace and Isabelle.
