Worth Wingate Collier, 85 of Wade, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 13, 2023, at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dunn.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Center Baptist Church in Wade with the Rev. Tim McQueen and Rev. Tommy Honeycutt officiating. Burial will follow at McMillan Presbyterian Church. A viewing will take place from 1:00pm - 1:50pm for friends. The family will not be present. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 15th, beginning at 1pm at the “Barbeque House” beside their home.

Wingate was a native of Cumberland County. He was proceded in death by his parents Worth Melvin Collier and Lona Matthews Collier, and brother Larry Melvin Collier.

Wingate graduated from North Carolina State College with a degree in Agriculture. After graduation, he joined the Army National Guard. After completing his service in the National Guard, Wingate went on to teach Agriculture in Lenoir County and Cumberland County. In 1970, Wingate formed South River Farms just down the road from his childhood home in Wade, North Carolina. Wingate retired in 2021 after a long and successful career. Wingate received the 1976 Pork All American award from the National Pork Council. Wingate served on the Board of Directors with the Bethany Fire Department for 31 years. He also served on the Cumberland Soil and Water Conservation District Board for over 25 years, with multiple terms as the District Supervisor. Wingate was a vital part of the Board’s mission to protect the natural  resources of Cumberland County. In 2000, Wingate was inducted into the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame, a prestigious recognition for residents who have made significant contributions to agriculture and the rural community. Wingate was a longtime member of McMillan Presbyterian Church in Wade, North Carolina and more recently Center Baptist Church, also in Wade.

Wingate is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janet W. Collier; a son, David A. Collier and wife Kelly G. Collier of Wade; granddaughter Taylor C. McPhail and husband Eric McPhail of Wade; great-grandson Luke McPhail; brother Otis Collier and wife Linda Collier of Smithfield; sister Ann C. Horne and husband Johnny Horne of Stedman; nephew Ray Collier and wife Fran of Deep Run; niece Amy Prakke and husband Mark of Raleigh; nephew Adam Horne and wife Felicia of Stedman; nephew Stephen Horne of Stedman; special caregiver Linda Brewington Thompson of Wade; brother-in-law Herman Warren and wife Brenda of Washington, NC; sister-in-law Dixie Honeycutt of Dunn; niece Angela Warren and husband Ricky of Dunn; niece Ginger Johnson and husband Brian of Dunn; nephew Lee Honeycutt and wife Julie of Dunn; and many great nieces and nephews.
