LELAND Ms. Vergie Smith Starnes, 72 of 8780 Lantana Lane, N.E., Leland, died on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, April 20, 2012 at Friendship Baptist Church in Garland. Ms. Starnes was born on August 31, 1939 in Bladen County to the late Rome Mitchell and Martha Irene Furmidge Smith. She was a homemaker. She is survived by: one son, John Lee Garvin and wife, Marlena of Leland; three sisters, Mary Beasley of Shelby, Ressie Wager of Leland and Verbie Williams of Roseboro; one brother, Paul Smith of Michigan; two grandchildren, Crystal D. Lancaster and Carol D. Kovar; and five great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro.
