Shirley Tanner Childress went to be with the Lord on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh, NC, surrounded by her family.

Shirley worked as an LPN at Sampson Regional Hospital before going to Mary Gran where she was employed for nineteen years.

She was a native of Sampson County, NC, the daughter of the late James and Lillian Tanner. She was preceded in death by her son, Gary W. Childress; brothers, Johnny Tanner, Jimmy Tanner, Jerry Tanner, Billy Tanner, Tommy Tanner, and Richard Tanner; and sister, Elaine Tanner Larson.

She is survived by three sons, Richard Childress, Bill Childress and wife Pam, and Lynn Childress; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Ann McLeod and Peggy Tanner of Sanford.

Per Shirley’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to Transitions LifeCare, 200 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
