Mr. Russell Pascal “Pat” Jones, 93 of Roseboro went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at Mary Gran Nursing Center.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Salemburg Baptist Church with Rev. Drew Bolin and Rev. Tommy Honeycutt officiating. Burial will follow in the Salemburg Cemetery with Masonic Rites.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM - 2:45 PM on Friday at Salemburg Baptist Church prior to the service.
Mr. Jones was a native of Sampson County, the son of Arthur Russell and Mallie Iola Spell Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Celeste Hensley and her husband, James F. Hensley, brothers, Bernice Jones and Chester Crafton Jones, Sister-in-law, Lou Alice Sawyer Royal and brother-in-law, Leon B. Royal and two nephews, James F. Hensley, Jr. and Arthur Hensley.
He was a graduate of Salemburg High School, Louisburg College, East College University and attended Duke University. He taught school in Murfreesboro, Hope Mills, Vanceboro, Clement and Lakewood High Schools. He coached football, Boys and Girls Basketball, Baseball and Softball for 39 years. He won 451 Baseball Games, was the 1A State Baseball Runner-up in 1975. He was the President of the NC Coaches Association in 1983, head Girls Basketball Coach in NC, East-West Game All Star Game in 1987. He coached over 2000 Varsity High School games. He also coached Senior Games, coached the Hooper Girls Basketball Team, where they won the National Championship in 2007. He was a member of the Southeastern Senior Golf Association.
He was inducted into the Sampson County Sports Hall of Fame; was a delegate to the Sampson County Senior TarHeel Legislator and was a member of the Salemburg Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He served on the Sampson County Board of Education; was a trustee of Sampson Community College. He was past President of the Sampson-Clinton Retired Teacher Association, Sampson County AARP, Sampson County Wildlife Club and Tomahawk Hunting Club.
He was a member and Past Master of Coharie Masonic Lodge # 379 and a member of the Sudan Shriners.
Pat enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Efale Sawyer Jones; daughter, Tonya Pascal Jones Wright and husband, Benjamin Lee Wright; son, Russell Winfield Jones; grandchildren, Benjamin Lee Wright, Jr. and wife Jena, Rebecca Jones Wright Ellis and husband, Andrew, Jonathan Pascal Wright; two great grandchildren, Jones Slade Wright and Tucker Ellis Wright.
