Roy Devone West passed away on December 28, 2007 in Charlotte, NC, after a long illness. Devone was born in Sampson County, NC, on April 19, 1937. He is survived by three children, Mershon Marie West of Charlotte, NC, Sheila Grace West of State College, PA, and Brian Howard West of High Point, NC; five grandchildren, Brian Dalton West, Leah Marie West, Candace Munoz, Owen Devone West, and Aidan Benjamin Fox; and seven siblings (Doris Martin, Edna Barker, Betsy Guthrie, James West, Marie Martin, Larry West, and Judy Rimel). He is preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Owen West, and his father, Roy Jackson West. All of his life, Devone had a passion for education and he loved language. He earned a Bachelor's degree in History from Eastern Carolina College. He earned a Masters of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling from the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary. He participated in the doctoral program in Psychology at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. He served veterans for 25 years as a rehabilitation counselor at the Veterans Administration. Devone was a devoted Christian. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church in Clinton, NC, and he enjoyed singing in the choir and serving as a Sunday school teacher. Devone loved hunting, fishing, and gardening. Throughout his life, he used his mechanical skills to help others, and he devised novel solutions to everyday problems. He loved having the perfect tool for any job. For several years prior to his illness, Devone was a dedicated caregiver for his mother Evelyn Owen West. Devone was deeply loved by his family and friends. His unique character will be missed by everyone who knew him. Devone lived a life of integrity and his example of unconditional love continues to serve his family during this difficult time. Visitation will be held at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro, NC on Sunday, December 30, from 6:00-8:00 pm. The Funeral will be held at Harmony Baptist Church in Clinton, NC, on Monday December 31 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a scholarship fund to honor Devone's passion for education.
