Robert Paul (“Bob”) Kunkel was born June 22, 1939, the only child of Mildred Kunkel and Lloyd Swavely. Bob grew up in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and was a proud member of the Emmaus High School class of 1957. He actively kept in touch with classmates throughout his life, and eagerly attended his 65th class reunion in 2022. Bob served his country as an Army cartographer at Fort Bragg, NC from 1963-1965, and it was during this time that he met his beloved wife, Sadie (Lucas). They were married from August 21, 1965 until Sadie’s death in June, 2022.

After receiving his honorable discharge from the Army, Bob brought Sadie back to southeastern PA where he worked as a draftsman, engineer, purchasing agent and manufacturing supervisor for many years at the General Seating and Sash Company. Bob was an active church member throughout adulthood, serving his local church as a kids’ teacher, small group leader, deacon and church treasurer.  Upon his retirement in 2006, the Kunkels returned to the Fayetteville area to be closer to family. Bob was a regular patron of the Rainbow Diner and well-loved by its staff.

He enjoyed traveling to see relatives, Civil War historic sites, scenic state parks, and grandsons’ baseball games. In both Pennsylvania and North Carolina, he spent many hours happily puttering in his yard and garden. He had a soft heart for both children and animals.

Bob was predeceased by his wife and step-son Randy Johnson. Surviving family members include his daughter, Ann and husband Matt (Durham, NC); grandson Jonathan and wife Carolyn (Raleigh, NC); grandson Andrew (Atlanta, GA); grandson Ryan (Durham, NC); brother-in-law Wendell Lucas and wife Aurene (Long Island, NY); sister-in-law Helen Gesino (Orlando, FL); and many nieces and nephews.
