Reuben Gene “The Legend” Johnson, 87 passed away on April 21, 2025, in Stedman, North Carolina.  Born on March 25, 1938 in Stedman, North Carolina.  Reuben lived a long and accomplished life rooted in dedication to his family and work.

Reuben devoted over five decades of his life to the field of bridge construction.  This career was marked by an unwavering commitment to excellence and a deep understanding of the structures that connect communities both literally and figuratively.  These contributions left a lasting impact of the infrastructure of the region and earned him the respect of colleagues across generations.

Beyond his professional achievements, Reuben had a love for automobiles, whether vintage models or fast Nascars.  He found joy in the timeless beauty and mechanical precision of these vehicles.  This passion reflected his appreciation for enduring quality and attention to details-traits that defined many aspects of his life.

Reuben is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Georgie T. Johnson; two sons, Michael Gene Johnson (Tammy) and Johnny Gene Johnson (Mandie); brother, Reese Johnson; sister, Virginia Mavropoulos; sister-in-laws, Ellen E. Wolford and Barbara Johnson; 10 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and 9 great great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest Pearly Johnson and Daisy Jane Carter Johnson; brothers, Columbus Johnson, Willie Johnson and Levie Johnson; sisters, Martha Johnson, Clara Johnson and Linda Caulder; brother-in-law, Carl Tracy Wolford; and sister-in-law, Shirley T. Kiser.

A funeral service honoring Reuben’s life will be held a Butler Funeral Home Chapel in Stedman at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 26, 2025, officiating will be Pastor Ronnie Johnson and Pastor William Hall.  Burial will follow at Johnson Family Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.

Reuben’s legacy lives on through the bridges he built – both structural and personal and through memories cherished by those who knew him.  May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
