AUTRYVILLE

Ret. SSG Blackmon "Boot" Matthews, 86 of Autryville, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, February 4, 2017.

He retired from the US Army with 20 years of service after serving four tours in Europe and several stateside assignments. He continued his education at, then FTI, earning his plumbing license. He was owner and sole operator of Blackmon's Plumbing until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Jenkins and Mary L. Faircloth Matthews; brothers, John M., David C., Joe R., George H. "Pete", Kelly F. Matthews; and granddaughter, Shannon L. Foster.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lettie Alma Honeycutt Matthews; daughter, Debra A. Brown and husband Larry of Salemburg; son, Dwight B. Matthews of Autryville; grandson, William Jeremy Foster of Autryville; granddaughter, Jessica S. Mahe and husband Tomm of Salt Lake City, Utah; great granddaughters, Haven M. Brown, Savannah L. Foster, Berlin Rice; great grandsons, Jeremy G. Foster, Adrian L. Mahe, Jeremiah B. Mahe; sisters, Rachel Taylor of Wade, Helen Barefoot and husband Ray of Autryville; and brother, Jesse Matthews and wife Verdie of Autryville.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00pm Tuesday, February 7, at Bethabara United Methodist Church, 4725 Maxwell Road, Autryville. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, February 8, with Reverend Hank Dunbar and Reverend Dorothy Rudd officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Services are by Butler Funeral Home of Roseboro.
