Mrs. Mittie Raedock Smith Matthews, 101 went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 27, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Clement Baptist Church with the Reverend Scott Keith. The burial will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 28, 2022 at Butler Funeral Home in Stedman.

Mrs. Matthews was a native of Edgecombe County, the daughter of Leon George and Mary Lillian Lewis Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Matthews; her son, Fred A. Matthews; eight brothers, Otis Smith, Robert Jackson Smith, Cary Smith, Carl Smith, Ronald Smith, Russell Smith, Jasper Smith and Elmer Smith; her sister, Louise Smith White; and her grandson, Rex Autry.

Mrs. Matthews dedicated her life to the service of Christ. She sewed and sent clothing for missions. Her community and church were a valued part of her life. She loved her family as Christ loved the church.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Leon Matthews (Joanne); five daughters, Ida Autry, Edith Edge (Burnice), Mary Beasley (Ken), Barbara Pruitt (Kermit), and Elaine Simmons (Dennis); her daughter-in-law, Sylvia Matthews, fourteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.
