Mrs. Maxine Crumpler West, 86

June 5, 1926 — December 16, 2012

ROSEBORO Mrs. Maxine Crumpler West, age 86, of Roseboro, died peacefully on December 16, 2012 after a long battle with lymphoma. Maxine was born in Sampson County on June 5, 1926 to the late Thomas Webster and Vara Butler Crumpler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Waits A. "Teamie" West of Roseboro, sister, Margaret Crumpler Fisher of Roseboro and brother, Raeford Crumpler of Clinton. She is survived by: her sister, Dixie Crumpler Blackmon of Raleigh; her son, Thomas West and wife Lynn of Roseboro, and her daughter, Delwood Herren and husband Jim of Wilmington; grandchildren, Matthew West of Burlington, Patrick West of Roseboro, Andrew West of Wilmington and Nicholas Herren of Wilmington; and great-grandchildren, Irie and Willow West of Wilmington and Colson West of Burlington. Maxine was a loving wife and mother who always strived to make a warm and comfortable home for her family. She supported her husband, children, and friends with gentleness and compassion that was an expression of her strength of character and faith in God. Her beautiful smile, sweet disposition, and concern for others were the seeds of cherished life-long friendships. Maxine was an avid gardener who loved nothing better than taking visitors on tours of her garden, pointing out her lovely flowers, and noting, with pride, the unique varieties that her friends had given her over the years. She could bring a scraggly plant back to life, force a reluctant one to bloom, and rattle off all of their names without hesitation. Maxine's nurturing personality made its way into the kitchen, too. No family dinner or church pot luck supper was complete without her legendary fried chicken and pecan pie. Family and friends watched with admiration at the courage, strength and humility that Maxine demonstrated as she faced a 27-year struggle with lymphoma. She rejoiced in life and wanted to enjoy it with those she loved. The family is very grateful to Baptist Hospital for the care that made this possible. At the end of her life, hospice nurses supported Maxine and her family with dignity and compassion. We thank all of her health care providers for their expertise and kindness. The funeral will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at the Roseboro First Baptist Church with Rev. Hampton Faircloth officiating. Burial will follow at the Roseboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington or to the Roseboro First Baptist Church where Maxine was a faithful member for over sixty years.
