Mattie Virglene Hall Hales, 86

Mrs. Mattie Virglene Hall Hales, 86, of 2540 Butler Island Road, Roseboro, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018 at her home.

The funeral will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 9, at Butler Funeral Home, 401 W. Roseboro Street, Roseboro, with Reverend Jim Woodruff and Reverend Bryan Strickland officiating. Burial will follow at Coston Hales Family Cemetery, Butler Island Road, Roseboro.

Born November 21, 1931 in Bladen County, she was the daughter of the late Hannabal Glen Hall and Alma Gladys Tatum. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Johnnie Coston Hales; a son, Johnnie Barton “J-Bird” Hales; a grandson, Rodney Ray Porter; three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by sons, Carl “Tom Thumb” Hales of Roseboro, Roger Jessup and wife Rhonda of Turkey; daughters, Gale Bullard and husband Larry of Beaver Dam Community, Autryville, Sue Porter of the home, and Judy Kitchen of Stedman; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Hales Hockaday; sisters, Dorothy Robinson, Rachel Johnson, and Kathy Shearer; and brother, Mike Hall. She was “Meme” to nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; and a special son, Tommy Elliott.

Mrs. Hales retired from Hamilton Beach in Clinton, NC. She attended church at Colly Chapel as long as her health permitted, where she was known for her “famous collards”, loved and known as “Miss Virglene” to all.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Monday at Butler Funeral Home, and other times at the home.
