Marie Bair Murphy, 80, passed away in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center surrounded by her children on April 5, 2014.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church with Rev. Evan Harrison officiating. A private burial will be held at Bullock-McLaurin Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Murphy was born on February 1, 1934 in Elloree, South Carolina to the late Junius and Burness Hungerpillar Bair. She is preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Earl B. Murphy; one brother, Charles Bair; and two sisters, Frances Bair Torgerson and Burness "Bunny" Bair Turner.
She was a devoted and loving wife and mother. She also treasured her nine siblings who were always present for her, as she was for them, and who fondly referred to her as "Sweetheart". A woman of many talents, Marie loved art, writing and, music. In the late 1970's she participated as a Board member of the Fayetteville Symphony. She also was a member of the North Carolina Poetry Society, and her works have been printed in various publications. With her marriage to her beloved, Earl, she became a lifetime member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church where she was very active in the church choir and served as an Elder.
She took great joy in preparing food for her friends, family and church family, delighting in feeding their stomachs, as well as their eyes with beautifully presented dishes.
She had a passion for not only the education of her own children, but also for encouraging the learning and growth of many others through her 40+ years as a Substitute Teacher for the Cumberland County Schools.
She is survived by: three daughters, Debbie Murphy Williams and husband LaMar of Fayetteville, Sharon Murphy Yates and husband Steve of Fayetteville, and Connie Murphy and husband Rex Swiney of Poplar Bluff, MO; one son, Wayne E. Murphy and wife Laurie of Nashville, NC; five sisters, Liza Bumgardner, Fay Boone, Grace Stallings, Sybil Henkel and Judi Pridgen; one brother, David Bair; four grandchildren, Corey McBroom and partner Austin Blankenship , Casey McBroom and wife Misty, Megan Langley and James Yates; and one great grandchild, Rainey McBroom; and many other beloved family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Butler Funeral Home in Stedman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sunnyside Presbyterian Church or the Vander Civic Association.
