Marian “Tommie” Vaught Wrench, 94, passed away on August 1, 2024, after several years of dwindling health and Alzheimer’s dementia.
She was born January 5, 1930, to Thomas Clyde Vaught and Avis Burroughs Vaught in Conway, South Carolina. They later moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, where she graduated from New Hanover High School in 1948.
During high school she met Andrew Thomas “Tommy” Wrench. They married in 1949, and thus began the adventures of Tommy and Tommie. Tommy did not let the fact that Tommie was a woman stop him from roping her into all manner of adventures, including a much-loved story of her hanging out of an airplane to stabilize the wing mid-takeoff. They were stationed in California and Tennessee during Tommy's time as a Navy pilot and moved to Roseboro in the mid-1950s to start their family. They joined the Roseboro United Methodist Church, where they both remained lifelong members. They would continue to travel and experience all of life’s offerings for over 70 years.
Tommie worked at the Brewer-Starling Medical Clinic in the early days of their time in Roseboro, and then at First Citizens Bank. However, the most fulfilling work she did was with and for Roseboro United Methodist Church. Through the decades, Tommie held many positions with the church: youth leader, choir director, choir member, program coordinator, secretary, and memberships on many committees. She founded the Senior Citizens group in 1972-1973 and led the meetings every Tuesday morning for almost 30 years. Tommie’s love of the Lord, the church, and all of God’s children was apparent to all she encountered.
Tommie was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy, and oldest daughter, Donna. Surviving are their youngest daughter, Andrea Shilkoff and husband James, granddaughter Karen Neadle, granddaughter Alicia Hamlin and husband Zane Hiatt, grandson Rick Lucas Hamlin, great-granddaughter Skylynn Hamlin, and nephews David Vaught and Sam Vaught.
