SALEMBURG
Ret. US Air Force Major Franklin McArthur White, 85 of Salemburg, NC, died at the North Carolina State Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville, NC, on December 17, 2010.
The funeral will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Roger A. White and Col. John B. White officiating. Burial will follow at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Salemburg with military honors.
Mr. White served his country in both the US Navy and the US Air Force. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by the Navy and many other awards and medals as he flew bombing missions as the bombardier on B-24s. He was discharged from the Navy in 1948 and attended Pineland College and Carolina where he graduated and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force. He flew planes of many kinds, from fighters to four engine tankers refueling smaller planes. He was stationed in Taiwan during the 60's as a maintenance officer with the Taiwanese government. He flew a C-47 from Florida to Vietnam and made two trips into South America to deliver planes to the government of Chile. He retired as an US Air Force Major.
Mr. White was a member of the Coharie Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years and had an outstanding commitment to the Republican Party. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyman and Irene White, his wife, Helene W. White and a sister, Lula White Sanderson.
He is survived by his daughter, Sandra W. Hinton and husband Willie of Southern Pines; two sons, Franklin M. White of Parker, Colorado, and Col. John B. White and wife Samantha of Goodyear, Arizona; four grandchildren, Michelle Olivan, SPC Thomas Hinton, Bryson White and Brennan White; one brother, Rev. Roger A. White and wife Mildred of Roseboro; and three sisters, Eleanor W. Hairr and husband Rupert and Sue W. Rogers both of Salemburg and Carrie W. Norton and husband Eugene of Jacksonville, Florida.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. on Monday evening at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro, and other times at the home of his brother, Roger A. White, 800 W. Roseboro Street, Roseboro.
