STEDMAN
Mrs. Mae Olive Spell Matthews, 99, a lifelong resident of 461 Obershea Lane, Stedman, NC died on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Mae was born on January 1, 1917 in Sampson County to the late Braxton and Lela Mae Royal Spell. Mae was the eldest daughter of 14 siblings whom she lovingly cared for as children. On November 9, 1939, she married Daniel Crosby Matthews, became a homemaker and for 48 years were inseparable. She enjoyed gardening, often sharing with family and friends, culinary delights, fishing and visits to the beach with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Daniel Crosby Matthews as well as eight brothers, Liston, Oscar, Venson, Randall, Lanier, Ernie, Alton, Lathan and sister, Muriel Willis.
Surviving to cherish her memory is a son, David Crosby Matthews and his wife Pat Ann of Fayetteville. Four sisters; Pauline Faircloth and Margaret Holland both of Salemburg, NC, Almetta Bellamy of Supply, NC, and Leola Royal of Boiling Springs, SC. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Mae enjoyed a long and fulfilled life, a credit to the adherence of Christian principles along with superb care by the staff of Golden Years Nursing Home in Falcon, NC.
A visitation and funeral service will be held Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Butler Funeral Home, 6535 Clinton Road, Stedman, with Richard Smith officiating. Burial will be held Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Autry-McAlpin Cemetery on Obershea Lane, Stedman.
