AUTRYVILLE
Lt. George L. Hoffman, Jr., of 301 Fox Run Lane, died on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the State Veteran's Nursing Home in Fayetteville.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010 at 7:00 P.M. at Butler Funeral Home Chapel, Stedman, with Rev. Tommy Honeycutt, Rev. Norman Day and Father Michael officiating.
Lt. Hoffman was born in Long Island, New York, to the late George L. and Anna Brooks Hoffman, Sr. He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Florence Downs and Jeanette Hoffman; and his mother-in-law, Hazel Royal. He retired from Nassau County, NY, Police Department as a Lieutenant after 37 years of service. After retiring, he received his coaching certificate and coached baseball for many years in Florida and then in Cumberland County, North Carolina. His coaching reached many young lives and taught the love of the game to everyone that came in contact with him. He also published two books, one police novel and then one baseball instructional book. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served in WWII.
He is survived by: his wife, Joyce Royal Hoffman of the home; eight children, Rosemary Steppe of Florida, Elaine Thomas of Colorado, George Hoffman, III of Florida, Virginia Wunsch of New York, Irene Connor of Massachusetts, James Hoffman, Gerard Hoffman and Joanne Matovich all of New York; 23 grandchildren, three great children, three step-grandchildren; and his Father-In-Law, E.T. Royal of Autryville.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening following the memorial service and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the friends of the Cancer Center at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center; or to the State Veteran's Nursing Home in Fayetteville, in memory of George Hoffman.
