Salemburg
Joyce Crumpler Poole, 86, from Salemburg, passed away on May 16, 2025.
Joyce was born on November 18, 1938, in Sampson County, North Carolina. She was raised in a lively and loving home surrounded by her six siblings and her devoted parents, the late Wilbert Lee Crumpler and Geneva Warren Crumpler. Her childhood, as fondly remembered by her surviving sister Frances, was a beautiful blend of joyful chaos, heartfelt laughter, valuable life lessons, and countless cherished memories.
From a young age, Joyce had a deep love and appreciation for music and family. She and her sisters often traveled to various churches across the region sharing their voices and their faith. Gifted with the rare ability to play piano by ear, Joyce often played and taught her grandchildren music creating cherished moments of joy and connection that are fondly remembered to this day. Her musical legacy lives on through her granddaughters, Carly and Currie, and her great-granddaughter, Emilia — each of whom has inherited a part of her passion and talent, continuing the song she began.
Joyce’s enthusiasm did not just stop at music, she was equally passionate about sports. She was a proud student-athlete at Stedman High School, where she excelled in basketball and softball earning “Best All-Around” and All-County honors for her athletic achievements. She was also an active member of the Monogram Club, the Beta Club, the Future Homemakers of America (FHA) Club, a homeroom officer and contributed her voice to the school newspaper. After graduating from Stedman High School in 1956, Joyce began her professional career at First Citizens Bank in downtown Fayetteville.
On December 20, 1959, Joyce married the love of her life, Billie Lynn Poole, Sr. Shortly after their wedding, the couple moved to Winston-Salem, where Bill attended law school at Wake Forest University. During that time, Joyce worked in the registrar’s office. Following Bill’s graduation, their family moved to Salemburg, where Joyce took a position with Boren Clay Products, working there until 1972. In the late 1970s, she began a long and successful tenure with Clinton Toyota, where she managed the business office with dedication and professionalism until her retirement in 2012.
Joyce also had a deep love for golf—a passion she shared with her beloved husband, Bill. Their mutual enthusiasm for the game led them to build their dream home on a golf course. From that special place, Joyce not only enjoyed playing the game but also found joy in watching others from the large windows of their living room. Surrounded by the beauty of the course and the sport she loved, their home became a peaceful sanctuary and a source of lasting happiness.
Some of her most treasured memories were the trips she took with Bill and their closest family and friends. She especially loved traveling with her sisters, visiting antique stores both near and far — so much so that there probably is not an antique shop on the East Coast that did not know her by name. But above all, Joyce’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and
her great grandchildren. She especially enjoyed taking her granddaughters on shopping trips to her favorite stores like T.J.Maxx and anywhere she could find a good bargain.
In a remarkable and touching reflection of Joyce and Bill’s deep bond, Joyce passed away on the very same date as her beloved husband, four years after his passing. Though separated by time, their journeys came full circle in a way that feels almost destined. Joyce will be laid to rest beside Bill on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 — a day made even more meaningful as it marks what would have been Bill’s 89th birthday. Their love story, marked by faith, devotion, and grace, continues even in rest.

She is also preceded in death by her mother-in-law Ada Currie Poole, special aunt Mazie Currie, and special sister-in-law, Virginia Turlington Strickland.
