Joy Ann "Ann" Warren Underwood, 84, of Clinton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family. Born on August 27, 1941, in Clinton, NC, Ann lived a life defined by devotion, generosity, and unconditional love for those she held dear.
Ann was the cherished daughter of Wellie Marson Warren and Joy Augusta Justice Warren. She deeply loved her parents and shared a special bond with her three brothers. The values of family, loyalty, and love that shaped her childhood remained at the center of her life.
For 66 years, Ann shared a loving marriage with her husband, Gene Lawson Underwood. Together, they built a family that became the pride and joy of her life. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a treasured grandmother, and a proud great-grandmother. Her daughters lovingly called her "Momma," and her grandchildren knew her as "Ma-Ma"—titles she treasured above all others.
Ann's greatest purpose was caring for her family. She worked tirelessly to ensure that those she loved had everything they needed and always felt supported. She expressed her love through countless acts of kindness, especially in her kitchen. Family gatherings, such as Sunday night dinners, were filled with her home-cooked meals, and she made it a priority to celebrate every birthday, ensuring each family member felt special and cherished.
She created traditions that became the heartbeat of family holidays and celebrations. Those traditions, built with love and intention, will continue to bring her family together for generations to come. Ann brought warmth, life, and purpose to everything she touched. She was dependable, compassionate, and always willing to help anyone in need. Family and friends knew they could count on her no matter the circumstance.
Ann's love extended beyond people to the animals she adored. She loved her fur babies as if they were her own children. Her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Annie, remained faithfully by her side until the very end, offering comfort and companionship.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Wellie Marson Warren and Joy Augusta Justice Warren; and her brothers, Douglas Wayne Warren, Marson Ray Warren, and Ronald Darwin Warren.
She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Gene Lawson Underwood; her daughters, Rhonda Jean Underwood, Joy Alese Underwood Ergun (Ali), and Leigh Ann Underwood Faison (Jay); her grandchildren, Abigail Lee Cannady (Mark), Joy Anna Arnold (John), John Lawson Faison, and Ferdinand Lee Faison; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Benjamin Mark Cannady, Oliver Grey Cannady, Joy Amelia Arnold, James William Arnold, and Christopher Leo Cannady.
Ann's legacy is one of unwavering love, dedication, and family. She taught those around her the importance of showing up for the people you love, celebrating life's moments both big and small, and creating traditions that bind generations together. Though her family will miss her deeply, they take comfort in knowing that her love lives on in every recipe shared, every holiday tradition continued, and every gathering filled with laughter and love.
Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
