Mr. James Richard “Ricky” Smith, 63 of Roseboro went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 10, 2026 at Wake Medical Center surrounded by his family.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with Rev. Joshua Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro and at other times at the home.

Ricky was a devoted husband, father, papa, son, brother, and uncle who meant the world to his family and everyone who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Smith; his son, Jamie Smith and wife Alex Smith; and his cherished grandson, Roy James Smith, who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his mother, Joann Fisher Smith; two sisters, Pam Pollard and husband, Keith and Donna Maguire and husband, Paul; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ricky was preceded in death by his father, Roy Smith; and brother, David Smith.

Ricky had a deep love for his family, his farm, and the simple moments that brought people together. He was happiest when surrounded by loved ones—whether cooking out, hosting gatherings, or celebrating any occasion, big or small. Known for his quick wit and sharp mind, Ricky always seemed to have an answer for everything and could bring a smile or laugh to any situation.

He especially adored his grandson, Roy, and treasured every moment spent with him. Ricky’s love for sweets was well known, and his warm, welcoming spirit made everyone feel at home.

A man with a generous heart, Ricky was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

Like the seasons of the field, his life was guided by faith, patience, and purpose. Now he rests in the Lord’s eternal harvest. A good farmer leaves behind more than fields—he leaves a legacy of hard work, love, and family.
