Mr. Harvis B. Smith, 92

GODWIN Mr. Harvis Baker Smith, 92 of 260 Old Tower Road in the Mt. Elam Church community, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Mt. Elam Baptist Church at 11:00 A.M. with Rev. W.H. Calcutt, Chaplain Randy Moore, and Rev. Wray Wheeless officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Smith was born in Bladen County on August 17, 1916 and moved to Sampson County in 1922. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edmon (E.B.) and Dollie Barnes Smith. He is also preceded in death by several aunts and uncles who lived in the Garland community. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and uncle. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Elam Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for 47 years. He was a carpentry teacher at Lakewood High School for 17 years and a past master of Mingo Masonic Lodge. Mr. Smith is survived by: his wife of seventy and a half years, Mabel Giles Smith; two sons, Nixon Smith and wife Lynn, and Keith Smith, both of Fayetteville; granddaughters, Susan Edwards and husband Ken, of Charlotte, LeAnn Steen and husband Zack, of Eastover, Erika Wilson and husband Tony, of Fayetteville; step granddaughter, Heather Edwards, of Fayetteville; one grandson, Stuart Smith of Newton Grove; and great granddaughters, Anna Edwards of Charlotte, Leilani and Aulora Steen of Eastover, and Rae Edwards of Fayetteville. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 P.M. at Mt. Elam Baptist Church, 2211 Mt. Elam Church Road, Roseboro, and all other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Elam Baptist Church Cemetery and Memorial Fund, 2211 Mt. Elam Church Road, Roseboro, NC 28382; or to a charity of your choice. Services are entrusted to Butler Funeral Home, 401 W. Roseboro Street, Roseboro.
