Retired CW4 Gregory Calvin Oliver
December 12, 1948 – May 31, 2026
Retired, Chief Warrant Officer Four (4) Gregory Calvin Oliver passed away on May 31, 2026, in Stedman, NC with his wife by his side.
Greg was a husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He was born in Logan, West Virginia and grew up in Cross Lanes, West Virginia. He graduated from Nitro High School and joined the United States Army at age 19 to serve in Vietnam. Greg was deeply proud of his service to his country and immediately went to flight school to pilot Huey helicopters. He served in Vietnam from 1968 - 1969 and earned the Silver Star and The Distinguished Flying Cross among other medals for valor and gallantry during missions. He continued to fly for 16 years and served as an instructor at Ft. Rucker, Alabama.
While in the military, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from New York State University. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer Four after 24 years of military service. He then worked as a civilian Computer Science Engineer for 10 years, including a period at the Pentagon. He enjoyed watching the Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers football and Atlanta Braves baseball. Greg relaxed by reading newspapers, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family especially his grandchildren and grand pups.
Greg is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sheila Bullock Oliver; daughter, Lana Oliver Haynes and husband Scott Haynes of Leland, NC, daughter, Alisha Jayne Oliver DeSarno and husband Michael Desarno of Charlotte, NC; 4 grandchildren, Samantha Haynes, Harper Haynes, Carson DeSarno, and Jude Desarno; sister, Paula Parsley and husband Jon Parsley of Winterhaven, FL, and sister-in-law, Liz Oliver of Plano, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Greg is preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Ruby Oliver of Cross Lanes, WV; brothers Gary Dean Oliver of Cross Lanes, WV, and US Army veteran Leslie Neil Oliver of Plano, TX.
On Sunday June 7th, the family will receive friends for visitation from 1:30 PM to 2:50 PM with funeral service at 3:00 PM at Butler Funeral Home Chapel 6535 Clinton Road, Stedman, NC, officiating will be Rev. Andy Wood. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, to be announced, at a future date.
