AUTRYVILLE
On Monday, January 9, 2017, Ethel Bullard Cashwell of Autryville died peacefully at her home surrounded by family and friends at the age of 99.
Ethel was born in Sampson County to Calhoun and Estella Bullard on November 21, 1917 and grew up with two brothers and two sisters. She married Brafford Cashwell in 1939 and moved to the farm in Autryville that her parents gave them.
On their farm, Ethel and Brafford raised three children. Ethel was a true homesteader, and still had a wood stove to cook untold pans of biscuits and skillets of cornbread. She raised chickens, had a milk cow and was known for her bountiful vegetable garden. A lifelong Jehovah's Witness, Ethel had a strong faith, an honest and generous heart and lived a life of service and witnessing to others. She loved her entire family with all her heart and her kindness and humor will be missed.
Along with her parents, Ethel is preceded in death by her husband; her son Jimmy Lee Cashwell and his wife Judy; brothers Bundy Bullard and Henry Bullard; and sister Iula Chase.
Ethel, also known to the grandchildren and others as Granny, is survived by her children, Betty Spell and her husband Earl Delano, and J.C. Cashwell and his wife Margaret, all of Autryville. She is also survived by grandchildren Rhonda Cashwell, Susan Renegar and her husband Mike, Ronald Spell and his wife Rose, Keith Spell and his wife Wendy, Jason Cashwell and his wife Heather, and Emily Cashwell and her husband Matt. She is also survived by great grandchildren Griffin Faircloth, Zachary Faircloth, Zanna Faircloth, Molly Renegar, Gray Renegar and his wife Kelly, Brad Lee Spell, Morgan Spell, Miranda Spell, and Jordan Ilund. Bonnie Hodges of Dunn is her surviving sister. Numerous nieces and nephews called her Aunt Ethel and countless others knew her as a friend.
The visitation will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 1:00pm, followed by the funeral service at 2:30pm at the Kingdom Hall at 3180 Roseboro Highway, Clinton. Burial will follow at Autryville Cemetery, E. Williams Street, Autryville.
