Mr. Elwood Merritt, Sr., 91, of Roseboro, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at Lower Cape Fear Life Care in Wilmington.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro with Reverend Andy Wood officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:50 AM on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro prior to the service.

Mr. Merritt was a native of Sampson County, the son of DeLeon Merritt and Annie Mae Tew Merritt. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty June Merritt; and three sisters. He was the retired owner and operator of Merritt’s Grocery and Grill. He also was a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by two daughters, Debbie Pettis and husband Bob of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Cheryle Fann and husband Michael of Carolina Beach; a son, Elwood “Woody” Merritt, Jr. of Roseboro; five grandchildren, Ashley Crumpler, Eric Crumpler (Bonnie), Heather Pearson (Chris), Summerlyn Merritt, and Courtney Bell (Kullen); three great-grandchildren, Olivia Crumpler, Marissa Crumpler, and Kolston Bell; and a sister, Evelyn Pearson and husband Charles of Clinton.
