Mrs. Ellen Doris McMillan Hall, 101 went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Cokesbury United Methodist Church with the Reverend Debbie Matthis officiating. The burial will follow at Fisher Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Butler Funeral Home in Stedman.
Ellen McMillan Hall was born to the late John Wesley and Lillie McCall McMillan of Stedman, on January 11, 1921. Her husband of 70 years, Jesse Willard Hall, proceeded her in death in May 2012. She was known throughout the community as “ Miss Ellen”. She was an active and a strong participant in her Church, (Cokesbury Methodist Church), and in the Stedman Community. She was a teacher’s aide at Stedman Elementary School for a number of years, helping with the fourth and fifth grades. She taught youth groups at Cokesbury Methodist Church and started both Brownie and Girl Scout Troops. She was involved with starting the Stedman Community Development Club. Cake Bakes and Fund Raisers were her forte, in getting funds to build the Stedman Community Building. In 1980, she purchased two houses in Fayetteville, and had them moved to Stedman onto a piece of her property. The two houses were joined together and after extensive renovations, including a lead lined wall, equipment for examination rooms and offices, and a small laboratory; the building passed inspections to become a medical facility. In 1981, the Stedman Family Clinic was opened under the care of Dr. Harish Verma. Miss Ellen was on the beginning committees and sponsorships for the Stedman Volunteer Fire Department. In 1990, she was given the award; “For Outstanding Service”.
In 2002, the award; “In Grateful Appreciation for 30 years of Time, Dedication and Service to Your Fire Department and the Stedman Community, was given to her by the Stedman Volunteer Fire Department. Again, in 2008, she was awarded for her dedication and support of the Stedman Volunteer Fire Department. In 1986, Insurance Commissioner Jim Long, began the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program, known as SHIIP. She graduated from one of the first training classes and enjoyed helping Seniors with questions about their Health Insurance , for many years. In 1993, she was awarded the Mickey Hanula Award for Distinguished Service; and in 2002, was awarded the Mickey Hanula Statewide Volunteer of the year. Miss Ellen was probably best known in the Stedman and Fayetteville Communities, by wedding planners and Brides! Her wedding cakes were legendary. Not only because they were delicious, but also because they were beautiful and meticulously decorated. For several years, she taught Cake Decorating Classes at Fayetteville Technical School. Miss Ellen is survived by her sister, Barbara McMillan Layton, formerly of Stedman, now living in Shallotte with her daughter and son-in-law; Sylvia and David Gilmore. Son: Jesse (Buddy) Willard Hall, Jr., (Judy Darden) Stedman; Daughter: Nina Hall Ellison (William (Billy) Ellison) Palm Coast, FL; Grand Children: Steven Hall (Dana) Cleveland Heights, OH; Jeffery Hall (Stephanie) Decatur, GA; Jeff Ellison (Brian) Chadds Ford, PA; Kari Ellison Eickhoff (Jamie) College Grove, TN; Great Grandchildren: Jentry Eickhoff (15), Jake (13), Warner (12), Walker (10), and Avery Ellison (11).
