Mr. Dennis Walter Owen, Jr., 71 of Roseboro, N.C., died on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Funeral services will be at Roseboro United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 3, 2013. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:45 P.M. followed by the services at 3:00 P.M. Burial will follow at Roseboro Cemetery. Reverend Bobby Herring will officiate.
Mr. Owen was the son of Dennis Walter Owen, Sr. and Jennie Draughon Owen of Roseboro. He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Walter Owen, III "Chip". He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 45 years, Rita Waters Owen; daughter, Susan Arrowood Owen Hunt, husband Doug and grandchildren, James, Owen and Virginia Hunt all of Roseboro; daughter, Tracy Arrowood Owen Acevedo, husband Ed and grandchildren, Elena and Eddie Acevedo of Richmond, Virginia; brothers, Jim Owen and wife Mary of Liberty, Edward Owen and wife Lynn of Clinton and Brian Owen and wife Karen of Roseboro; sister, Diane Owen Fisher and husband Lenon of Elizabethtown; several nieces and nephews; and special cousins, Ed and Sue Betts, Frank and Rosa Atwood and David and Linda Atwood.
Mr. Owen was a 1959 graduate of Roseboro High School. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a member of the Elizabethtown, N.C., National Guard for several years. Owen Chevrolet was incorporated in March 1966 by Dennis Owen, Sr. and his sons. After the demise of Dennis Owen, Sr., Walter became Dealer Operator and President and was recognized by the Chevrolet Motor Division for twenty-five continuous years as a Chevrolet Dealer. He was on the Roseboro ABC Board as President for 25 years, served on the first Roseboro Area Economic Commission and served as a Roseboro Town Council member.
Mr. Owen was actively involved in Roseboro United Methodist Church from a young age. He was proud to serve as church Treasurer as well as in many other capacities. He was an active supporter of the local schools, community events, charities and fundraisers. He will be remembered as a gentleman and for his generosity to all. He had a zest for life and enjoyed good times shared with family and close friends. Mr. Owen delighted in his grandchildren and their love and support, especially in his years of declining health.
Mr. Owen wants his friends and the nursing staff of Fresenius Kidney Care in Clinton and Roseboro to know how much he appreciated their kindness, laughter and professionalism, which made his life so much easier, since 2004.
