D'Arcy Cloniger (King) Matthews

On Sunday, April 27, 2025, Heaven received, with open arms, D’Arcy Cloniger (King) Matthews. Peacefully and lovingly, she left this plane and joined all of her other loved ones and family on the other side ~ surrounded by her family, she bravely released her earthly grip and flew high to her Heavenly Host..

D’Arcy Cloniger (King) Matthews will be lovingly remembered by her 4 children and step daughter; Brad King, D’Arcy Elaine King, Lib King Ferguson (Dan), Anna King Holland (Mark), Melba Spivey (David) 15 grandchildren and 14 great- grandchildren, and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her adored husband, Dr. Charles Edward Matthews and younger brother, George Michael Cloniger.

D’Arcy Cloniger King Matthews~Was lovingly known as ‘Nana’, by her numerous grand and great grand children, ‘Mamma’, ‘Mom’, or ‘D’Arcy’ by her children and stepchildren.

She was born August 24, 1935~ In Roseboro, NC, Graduated Roseboro High School, where she played basketball. She married, had 4 children, and raised them, primarily in Durham, NC (Parkwood.)

D’Arcy worked Burnham Van Service, Menlo Logistics as Office Manager/ Accountant and Admin Manager for well over 30 years. Before permanent retirement she was at Target, Durham, where she met many friends as co workers.

Mom’s favorites in life included, spending time with her children, grand & great grands; her dear (late in life) marriage to Charles; the UNC Tar Heels; celebrating on Franklin St., shopping at Talbots, good Southern cooking…(with the fat back!)

She made lovely cross stitch works, she was famous for her Kentucky Derby Pies, and ‘Pink Dip.’

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 30th at the Roseboro Cemetery at 11am conducted by Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro, North Carolina.
