STEDMAN
Mr. Charles Douglas Bryant, 91 of Stedman, NC, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at his home. He was born November 25, 1924 in Andalusia, Alabama. He lived on Santa Rose Beach, Florida, until six, DeFuniak Springs, Florida, until age ten when his parents moved back to Stedman.
Douglas graduated from Stedman High School in 1942. He attended Louisburg College and served in the Navy before entering N.C. State where he earned a B.S. degree in Agricultural Education in 1949. He taught Vocational Agriculture Education at Hallsboro and Stedman High Schools. He earned a Master's Degree in Agricultural Education in 1953 and joined the faculty in Agricultural Education at N.C. State in 1957. In 1958-59 he and his family joined a Stanford University Team to go to the Philippines where he served as an advisor in the teacher education program at Baybay National Agricultural School in Baybay, Leyte. Upon returning to the states he and his family lived in East Lansing, Michigan, where he earned a Doctorate in Education. He returned to N.C. State and was on the Agricultural Education faculty until his retirement in 1984.
For several years after retirement he was active in Stedman Community Development Club, was a Stedman Town Commissioner, trustee to the Cumberland County Library and Information Center and was awarded Trustee Of The Year Certificate by the N.C. Public Directors Association in 1993. He served in many roles at Cokesbury United Methodist Church and the Golden Anniversary Council at Louisburg College.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Elva Bullard Bryant and James Cole Bryant; daughter, Melinda Cole Bryant Bynum of Rocky Mount; and brothers, James Cole Bryant, Jr., and William L. Bryant.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Dare Worthington Bryant; son, Charles "Chuck" D. Bryant, Jr. and wife Katherine of Cary; son-in-law, Harry Bynum and wife Melissa of Rocky Mount; grandsons, Zachary Bynum, Alexander Bynum, and Charles Bynum of Rocky Mount, and Charles D. Bryant, III, of Cary; step-grandchildren, Marjorie Keel Gately of Charlotte, and James Keel of Raleigh; brother, Thomas Bryant and wife Emily of Virginia Beach, Va; and sister, Ruth B. Maxwell of Covington, La.
The funeral will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, April 2, at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, Stedman, with Reverend Mike Elliott and Reverend Caswell Shaw officiating. Burial will follow at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery, Whiteville, NC.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, April 1, at Butler Funeral Home, 6535 Clinton Road, Stedman, and other times at his home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Louisburg College, Louisburg, NC; Cokesbury United Methodist Church parking lot fund, Stedman, NC; or to 3HC Hospice, Clinton, NC.
