Candace Leigh (Long) Peters

November 29, 1967 — April 10, 2025

Roseboro

In loving memory of Candace L. Peters. With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life and legacy of Candace L. Peters, a devoted nurse, beloved wife, mother, aunt, and fierce nurturer of many, who passed away peacefully on Thursday April 10, 2025 at the age of 57.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Wednesday April 16, 2025 at Butler Funeral Home in Roseboro. Born to the late Gail (Carl “Jimmy”) B. Horne and John (Gloria) Long carried with her the values of compassion, resilience, and unconditional love—qualities that defined her both personally and professionally. A nurse by calling, not just by trade, she poured her heart into every life she touched, offering care, comfort, and strength to patients and their families during their most vulnerable moments. Her hands healed, her presence soothed, and her spirit uplifted. Her life was a living testament to service—not just in her career, but in her relationships. She was the proud and loving wife of Darrel Peters, and the endlessly devoted mother to her cherished son, Anthony Winstead. Family was everything to her. She was a guiding light to her sisters Jamie “Michelle” Horne, Michelle Crafa step sister Geri Dunn and two nieces Alexia Horne & Alyssa Horne, a doting great-aunt to her great niece Pocahontas Chavis and great nephew Elijah Horne, and a second mother to her beloved niece Destiny Horne, who preceded her in death and held a place in her heart like no other. But her reach extended beyond bloodlines. Over the years, she opened her arms and heart to a host of adopted children—young souls who found in her a safe harbor, a listening ear, and a source of unwavering love and wisdom. To them, she was simply “Ant”—a title she wore with fierce pride. She will be remembered for her warm smile, quick wit, tireless work ethic, and the way she made everyone feel seen and valued. She had a gift for making a house a home and a job a mission. Her legacy will live on in the lives she healed, the hearts she mended, and the family she held together with quiet grace and fierce devotion. Candace leaves behind a loving husband, Darrell, her son Anthony, her two nieces Alexia and Alyssa, her great-niece and great-nephew Pocahontas and Elijah Horne, two brothers Bill and John Long, three sisters Jamie “Michelle” Horne, Michelle Crafa and Geri Dunn, aunts Kathy Herbert and Phyllis Randall and a host of adopted children (Almena Waddell and Andrew Chavis) who carry her spirit with them. Beyond her immediate family members Candace leaves behind a host of family and a village of friends to cherish her memory. She now rests in peace, reunited with her parents and her precious niece, whose reunion in Heaven we imagine was filled with joy and tears of love. Her life was a gift to all who knew her. Her memory will remain a blessing forever.
