Mr. Anson "Mack" Matthews, 87 of 5596 Kennel Road, died on Monday, April 5, 2010 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at Center Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Helms officiating. Burial will follow at the Maxwell Cemetery in Autryville with military honors.
Mr. Matthews was born on May 14, 1922 in Cumberland County to the late Anson D. and Alice Williams Matthews. He was a Veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired after 30 years as a Diesel Mechanic with Gulf Oil Corporation.
Mr. Matthews is survived by: his wife, Merle Page Matthews of the home; three daughters, Carmen "Connie" M. Matthews and husband, Payton of Wade, Sharyn M. Jackson and husband, Michael of Godwin, and Cheryl M. Tornow and husband, Fred of Monroe; five grandchildren, Traci Alphin and husband, Troy, Nicholas Matthews and wife, Michelle, Page Smith and husband, Wil, Justin Tornow and husband, Joseph Westcott, and Matthew Tornow; and two great granddaughters, Kathryn Alphin and Alexis Alphin.
The family will receive friends on Thursday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:00 P.M. at the church, and other times at the home.
