Westa Barefoot Obituary

ROSEBORO, NC

Westa Ann Hawley Barefoot passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2019.  With her daughters by her side, she transitioned into her Heavenly home.  Westa was born September 5, 1940 and lived her younger years in Erwin, NC.  She graduated 3rd in her class at Erwin High School.  She attended Holmes College of the Bible in Greenville, SC.  She met and married Noah B Barefoot.  Soon after they married they made their home in Roseboro, NC where they lived for 52 years.

Westa was a member of the Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church.  She was very active in every ministry there.  She was a leader in the choir, Women's Ministry, Christian Education Department, Deaconess, and many other roles were fulfilled by her.  Her most enjoyable role was that of her Sunday School class.  You would find her studying to prepare for the Sunday lesson and always seemed to be excited to be given the opportunity to share that time with her students.

Westa worked for over 15 years at Sampson Technical Institute (Sampson Community College).  While she was there, she was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.  This was presented to her by Robert W Scott, governor of NC at that time, for her work in getting the nursing program started at Sampson Technical Institute.  This award speaks volumes about her work ethic.  She continued her work as a secretary/bookkeeper for the IPHC Christian Education Department in Falcon, NC.  She loved being involved with the work of the Lord and felt her employment was not just a job but was a ministry.  She retired after over 25 years of service there.

Westa was a loving mother, cherished grandmother, devoted daughter, wonderful sister, and special aunt to her many nieces and nephews.  She was a loyal friend.  If you had Westa as a friend, you knew you had someone that would be with you in thick and thin.  She was caregiver extraordinaire.  She was always taking care of someone.  Sitting with the sick or taking someone a meal, she was selfless with her time and energy.  The world has lost a great lady.  Our loss is Heaven's gain.

Westa is preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo and Mary Hudson Hawley; husband, Noah B Barefoot; son, Noah B Barefoot, Jr.; sister, Ellen Johnson; brother, Alenzo Hawley; and Theresa Jane "Cassie" Barefoot.  Her legacy continues to live on through her two daughters, Bonita Barefoot Spain (Reggie) of Greenville, NC, Westa Dawn Barefoot of Greenville; grandchildren, William Coleman Spain of Berkley, CA, Tollie Anne Spain of Greenville, NC, Mary Catherine Spain of Charlotte, Hudson Noah Spain of Greenville, Mary Beth Barefoot of Greenville, NC; sister, Jean Jernigan (Raymond) of Raleigh, NC; brother, Basil Hawley (Inez) Coats, NC; and many special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Kindred Hospice Care, especially Angela, and Gwen.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, March 22, at Peniel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 3681 Dunn Road, Roseboro, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm on Thursday evening at Peniel Church, and other times at her home after 1:00pm Wednesday.
